Zeiss Ikon 16mm “Kinox” sound Projector

The Zeiss “Kinox” sound projector was made in Germany circa 1932. It was an updated version of an earlier silent machine - as seen in the advertisement.

A close look at the threaded film will reveal that the machine was made to the early DIN standard*.

Germany initially adopted a standard for 16mm sound films with the optical sound track and perforations on opposite sides of the film when compared to the American (and now universal) standard.

The illustration at left shows the film threaded with the perforations on the inside, as per the design of the projector.

The ‘suitcase’ design provided for a portable, compact machine. The lamphouse was fitted to the rear side of the machine when in use, or housed within the case for transportation.

* DIN standard refers to technical specifications set by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (German Institute for Standardization).
